OJ Simpson Apologizes for Role in Armed Robbery

On September 13, 2007, OJ Simpson and several other men broke into the hotel room of sports memorabilia dealer, Bruce Fromong, and stole various items at gunpoint. Simpson would claim that he was trying to retrieve items that were stolen from him and that the robbery wasn't done at gunpoint. A jury disagreed, however, sentencing Simpson to 33 years in prison with eligibility for parole in nine years. |

In 2006, during a performance at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, California, Michael Richards became enraged at some hecklers in the audience and used several racial epithets as well as referring to lynchings. The audience responded by calling Richards a "cracker" and an "white boy." Following the incident, Richards appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to offer an apology. The venue was clearly confusing for the audience as they would frequently laugh at things Richards would say in complete seriousness. |

Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott drew a firestorm of criticism in December of 2002 after a toast he made at Retiring Senator Strom Thurmond's birthday party. Lott said in his toast: "I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years." The reason the statement was controversial was because Strom Thurmond had run for president in 1948 on a segregationist platform. The statement seemingly implied that segregation might have prevented many of the country's social problems that exist today. |
